Stormzy’s Stab-Proof Vest Nominated for Design of the year Award

The statement piece was worn at Glastonbury Festival and was created by the one and only Banksy

Stormy made his performance at Glastonbury festival one to remember and it’s not just because of his song choice, but for his wardrobe selection. The rapper wore a Banksy designed stab-proof vest with the United Kingdom Union Jack flag sprayed across the front. A year later, the iconic vest has been nominated for the prestigious Beazley Designs of the Year Award. The vest is one of 74 nominees and the winner will be announced next month at the London’s Design Museum.

Banksy’s description:
“capable of stopping bullets up to .45 calibre and is fully stab proof, yet not machine washable.”

Stormzy wore the vest to highlight the influx of knife crime in Britain. He also used this opportunity to speak on the injustices of young Black youth in the judicial system.

The director of London’s Design Museum told the Evening Standard that “This year’s exhibition explores key moments in design from January 2019 to the moment global attention shifted in late January 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold — the selected projects respond to urgent questions of inequality and censorship, health and sanitisation, and the ongoing possibilities of design and technology.”
