Running from October 1 to 13, Christie ‘s latest “Watches Online: Discovering Time” auction is offering a rare vintage car timepiece and motorsport enthusiasts will surely appreciate it: the Rolex Daytona once owned and worn by the late racing hero Carroll Smith.
Starting his career as a racecar driver, Smith will be working alongside Carroll Shelby at Ford to build the world-famous GT40 (as seen in Ford vs. Ferrari) that won the Le Mans 24-hour race across four consecutive years, as well as playing a part in Ferrari’s F1 supremacy in the 1970s thanks to his engineering skills. The watch itself — ref. 6265 with its panda dial and steel tachymeter bezel — was a gift from the Cuddy Racing Team to Smith, commemorating the L&M F5000 Championship Series back in 1973, an occurrence immortalised by the engraved caseback.
Planned to get between $150,000 USD and $200,000 USD, you can learn more or bid on Smith’s Rolex Daytona ref. 6265 at Christie’s.
